Wilderness Accommodation

Boardwalk Lodge Accommodation in Wilderness

There is a large selection of accommodation in Wilderness given its relatively small size, with almost 100 different hotels, guest houses, self catering facilities and other such places to stay.

It is important to note that Wilderness is spread over quite a large area. Therefore you should select your accommodation based on your personal location preferences.  Ideally you should consider whether or not you want to be within a close walk of the beach.  The other main factor is whether being close to the “town centre” of Wilderness is important for you.  This area contains a great selection of restaurants, and most shops and amenities, all in a compact area at the western end of the town.

An alternative option in Wilderness is to stay further inland, and likely have stunning lagoon, forest and mountain views.  Accommodation here is likely to be slightly cheaper than that in central Wilderness or on the beach.

Hotels and Guest Houses

If you prefer to stay in large hotels, then your best option is The Wilderness Hotel.  Established in 1928, the hotel has approximately 150 rooms and is reasonably priced.  It is centrally located, just a minute or two’s walk from plenty of restaurants and shops, and under 10 minutes walk from the beach.  The hotel has a restaurant, spa, swimming pool, tennis courts, a squash court, gym and a bowls green.  It also offers a children’s play area, and is probably the best  hotel option if you are staying with children.

For a more upmarket experience also in a central location, consider the 5-star Cinnamon Boutique Guest House.  This has 13 upmarket suites, each with its own balcony.  The guest house offers a pool, gym and massage bed.

If you prefer to stay right on the seafront with direct access to the beach from your accommodation, there are plenty of options.  One of these is the beautiful Xanadu Guest Villa, which has 6 luxurious suites.  From here it’s just a short drive to central Wilderness.

Alternatively The Pink Lodge on the Beach has a large garden with direct access to the beach.  It consists of around 10 rooms offered at great prices, including a couple of rooms with self-catering facilities.  The Pink Lodge is located just a couple of minutes drive from the central area of Wilderness.

For a different type of view, Wilderness Manor is an elegant guest house where 3 of the 4 rooms have great views of the lagoon.  It’s around a 10 minute walk or very quick drive to get to the amenities of central Wilderness from here.

The options listed above are just some of our favourite recommendations.  There are a few alternative options for hotels in Wilderness and lots more guest house accommodation in Wilderness.

Self Catering

Excellently located, just slightly up the hill at the back of Wilderness, is Boardwalk Lodge.  This is situated around 5 minutes walk from the shops and restaurants and 10 minutes walk from the beach.  It also offers a stunning view over the sea and lagoon.  Boardwalk Lodge has 9 different self-catering units ranging from small suites for 2 people up to chalets that cater for 6.  A pool with a braai area has stunning views over the town and ocean.

Literally located next door to Boardwalk lodge, and hence sharing the same gorgeous views, is the 5-star Livingstone Villa.  This luxurious 3 bedroom villa sleeps 6 people and is exquisitely furnished and extremely well equipped.  It also has its own heated small pool.

If you are travelling alone or as a couple, and want to be situated right in the centre of Wilderness, then the reasonably priced Old Post Office Lodge is perfectly located above Pomodoro restaurant.  The six rooms only have a kettle and small fridge for catering purposes, so this option is best if you are happy with eating out (breakfast is included and served in the restaurant below).

The Pink Lodge (described as a guest house above) includes 2 self-catering units which accommodate 4 and 6 people.

If you are looking for something completely different, located in the middle of nature, consider Reflections Eco Reserve.  It has 4 fully-equipped timber “eco chalets” which each sleep up to 4 adults and 2 children.  Each chalet is secluded from the others to give that feeling of natural isolation.  Located in the National Park, Reflections is on the eastern edge of Wilderness and is a 20 minute drive from the central area of town.

Maybe none of the above take your fancy or they are booked for your desired dates?  There are lots of other options for self-catering accommodation in Wilderness.

Backpackers

The Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge is highly recommended.  Not only does it have excellent beach and sea views, but it’s also only 10 minutes walk from central Wilderness.  In addition to 28 dorm beds, it has some self-contained rooms with shared bathrooms and some en-suite rooms.

There are also a couple of other places for backpackers in the town.

Camping

If you’d like to camp, consider the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp, situated in the National Park, by the river.  This accommodation is managed by SANParks (South African National Parks), and is located 5 minutes drive from the central area of Wilderness.  There are over 130 camping stands in these beautiful surroundings.

There are a few other camping sites in Wilderness too.
