Ebb and Flow Rest Camp
Overview
The Wilderness Ebb and Flow Rest Camp offers basic and well priced accommodation in the beautiful Garden Route National Park. South Africa National Parks (SANParks) operate and manage the rest camp. Accommodation consists of areas for tents and caravans as well as small rondavels, cabins and cottages.
Location
The camp is situated in a beautiful tranquil area of the Wilderness section of the National Park. The camp is divided into 2 distinct north and south sections, both of which have lush grass. The area also has lots of trees and is adjacent to the Touws and Serpentine rivers.
It is under a ten minute drive to both the beach and the main central area of Wilderness.
There are no accessibility issues to get to the park in general. However the wooden cottages and cabins are built on stilts and hence have a few stairs up to the entrance.
Accommodation Options
Wilderness Ebb and Flow Rest Camp has nearly 150 demarcated camping stands, some of which are suitable for caravans.
There are also just under 50 rondavels, cottages and cabins. Half of these sleep just 2 people, whereas the other half sleep 4. Some of these have their own partially equipped kitchen, but for others you would need to use the shared kitchen. Similarly, some have their own private bathroom (some with just a bath, others with a bath and shower), whereas the cabins and some rondavels require use of the shared ablution facilities. When booking, you should indicate whether you would like a double or twin beds.
Guests can use the braais (BBQs) which are scattered around the grassy area.
Meals
No pre-cooked meals are available on site. The many restaurants in the central area of Wilderness are under ten minutes’ drive away.
Facilities
Needless to say, there are huge expanses of grass on which children can play. Although there is no swimming pool, it is possible to swim in the gently flowing river.
There is a main reception which is open all day, and coin-operated washing machines are available. Shops in the main town area of Wilderness are just a short drive away.
House Rules
The Rest camp obviously allows children, but not pets. Check in is from 2pm and check out is by 10am.
Getting There
To get to reception, turn onto “Ebb and Flow Drive” directly from the main N2 road, then just continue straight. A brown signpost pointing to “Wilderness National Park” indicates the turn off the N2 from both directions. If travelling eastwards on the N2 from George, the turn is on the left, about 1.5km (a mile) past the main turn into Wilderness village. If you are driving westwards from Knysna on the N2, the turn is on the right and is around half a kilometre (less than half a mile) after the only traffic circle (roundabout) on the N2 in the area.
Guest Feedback
Recent guest feedback on the Rest Camp focuses on how beautiful the surroundings are and how clean and well maintained the facilities are. Reviewers also frequently mention the friendliness of the staff. The most frequent negative comments relate to accommodation that only has 2 single beds rather than a double bed, so please check this when you book if it is important to you.
