Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge
Overview
Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge has a long-term reputation for being one of the best places for backpackers to stay on South Africa’s Garden Route. Owner Annie has been there for around 15 years. The lodge offers a variety of different types of budget accommodation at great value prices.

Location
The Beach House is situated just above Wilderness beach, giving great views of the ocean. It is about 2 minutes’ walk to get to the beach (only because it’s not possible to walk directly down onto the beach). It is also under a 10 minute walk to get to the central area of Wilderness, with its many amenities.
To get to the accommodation involves going up a small hill and a few stairs.
Accommodation Options
The backpackers lodge has 24 beds across 2 dorms, then 8 other smaller rooms which offer more privacy. There is one family room with 4 single beds, and 7 rooms with either double or twin beds. Three of the double rooms have a private en-suite bathroom, whereas the occupants of the other rooms use a shared bathroom.
The bathrooms have showers, and there is an ablution block for use by those staying in the dorms. Some of the rooms have a safe.
There is a shared kitchen for use by all residents, which has an oven, stove, microwave, fridge and freezer along with crockery and utensils.
Free Wi-fi is available but only for a limited amount of time.
Meals
A healthy breakfast is available in the mornings at an additional cost. Pizza is also available in the bar area on some evenings. For those wanting to eat out, the many cafes and restaurants in central Wilderness are under ten minutes’ walk away.
Facilities
Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge has a bar and entertainment area which includes a pool table. There is also a garden, and outdoor braais (BBQs) are available for the use of guests.
House Rules
Check in is from 1pm to 8pm and checkout is by 10am. Children are allowed at the Beach House, but pets are not.
Getting There
In order to get to Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge, you need to take the Station Road turn off the main N2 road. If travelling eastwards from George, this is on the right and is only around 150 metres after the sign saying you have entered Wilderness – there is a specific lane just for vehicles making the right turn. If you are travelling westwards from Knysna, the turn is on the left and is only 100 metres after the main turn for Wilderness village (which is on the right).
After turning onto Station Road, immediately bear right, then continue in a straight line parallel to the N2. When Station Road turns to the left, continue straight onto the non-tarred Western Road. Just keep going all the way to the end to find your destination. Free parking is available at the Backpackers Lodge.
Guest Feedback
Recent reviews for Wilderness Beach House Backpackers Lodge focus on the wonderful views, proximity to the beach, how friendly the staff are, and the great vibe. Most negative comments relate to the free Wi-fi access being very limited, and some people comment on how one side of the lodge is very close to the main highway and the amount of noise that results from this in certain rooms.
